So, let’s say that you have absolutely no use for the little envelope that is residing next to your volume applet since you installed Lucid Lynx. It is a very useful little guy if you use Evolution, or if you install something like gmail notifier to check your web mail. If not, then here’s how you can remove it.![]()
Open a terminal and enter this command:
sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages
That’s it, once you restart your machine, the envelope will be gone. You can also restart the panel without restarting your machine.
ALT + F2 to bring up a Run dialog box. Then enter killall gnome-panel. You’ll see all of your panels, or taskbars, disappear, and then reappear in a few seconds.
If I want replace evolution to thunderbird in indicator? when I do this?
@ Bruno – Here is a little project that may do just what you’re asking about. I’m not a Thunderbird user myself, and have not tried this, but I hope it helps!
Yes but it takes the volume and battery indicators with it! Why do people keep posting this silly solution?
Actually, I still have my volume indicator after doing this. I can’t speak to the battery indicator, as I haven’t tried this on a notebook. I’ve done this to two of my machines, both running 10.04, one 64 bit, and one 32, and on both I still have my volume indicator.
This is something that should be addressed in future releases. A graphical way to configure what shows up in the indicator area. If I don’t want the mail icon, I should be able to easily get rid of it without having to ditch volume and battery (on notebooks) as well.
