Ubuntu at the public library

My local public library uses Ubuntu for a variety of purposes. It has benefited them in several ways as well.

  • Cutting costs
    • Operating system — FREE
    • Office Suite — FREE
    • Anti-virus software — FREE
    • Software licensing — N/A
  • Ability to re-use older hardware
  • Freedom from licensing
  • Stability
  • Speed on the desktop

Library staff has really appreciated the benefits as a result of implementing Ubuntu. One thing they really like is the lack of frequent locking up and crashing that they used to experience quite often with Windows. This was especially true on the children’s machines, which take some serious abuse. They currently use Ubuntu on…

  1. Public Access Machines
  2. Children’s computers
  3. Search computers — OPAC
  4. Circulation desk computers
